The Cottages and Gardens:
Situated on the wine
route in the middle of nowhere on thirty acres of verdant
farmland are two delightful and unique cottages. Created by
architect Bruce Goodsir, they blend seamlessly into their
environment. Leadlight windows, high ceilings, queen beds
and complete privacy ensure that couples enjoy their stay.
All the comforts of home and very generous breakfast
provisions allow you to set your own timetable and enjoy
your days, unhindered by the dictates of others.
The cottages, set
around a green lawn enclosed by pergolas of climbing roses,
set off by clipped hedges, are a peaceful haven after the
day?s explorations. They sit in a Victorian garden, now
extended into parkland, which encompasses a number of
features. The Pear and Arbour Walks were planted at the turn
of the century (1904) and the old pear trees, massive
redwoods and towering rhododendrons are testament to the
vision of the then owner, Mr. Frank Walker, orchardist and
traveler. Trained at Kew Gardens, he has left his vision to
delight future generations. The new Laburnum and Crab Apple
Walks will hopefully be enjoyed in a similar way by garden
enthusiasts. The Pear and Arbour Walks are about 150 meters
long, one fragrant and romantic; the other, shady and
mysterious, is being restored. The original property was
once ninety acres of orchard and later, a nursery garden.
Glimpses of the garden?s past are everywhere, especially
near the old homestead
Shut the gate and let
the rest of the world disappear. You can picnic in the
extensive grounds where, if you are lucky, you may catch
sight of the shy platypus in the lake. In spring, flowers
are everywhere and large trees shelter shrubs and lawns.
Open only to guests, the miniature ponies are the only ones
to watch as you meander around the garden.
Spend Your Days
An easy drive from
many attractions and activities, the cottages are also well
situated to explore local wineries and gourmet food. An
easy drive to the Tamar River enables tourists to explore
the lovely scenery and admire excellent local art and
craft. Lovely restaurants and deli?s in Launceston ensure
you can dine in style or feast on a budget. Bush walking in
the area is popular and the views are breathtaking.
Hollybank Reserve is close by, as is the Lavender farm, and
many other attractions.
